There are many things that can be done to optimize health, but let's start with meditation and stress.

Since stress suppresses the immune system according to scientific research, even one quick meditation technique may reverse its effects, along with combating the other debilitating effects related to it like insomnia, and enhance peace of mind.  Students who meditate also report better and more enjoyable learning.

While there are far more reasons why relaxation, meditation techniques, getting rest and a good nights sleep are beneficial, the birth of killer viruses like the bird flu can make it a life and death matter. Avian flu, SARS, and other new diseases are not the only issue though. How much is it worth to you, and others, to just not get a cold or flu every year? You feel horrible for weeks, spread it to your friends and family, don't enjoy anything, lose work or study time, and a lot of money - both in lost productivity and medical bills.

There are other things that are important besides meditating though. Diet, nutrition, sanitation habits, new technology and anti viral pharmaceuticals can all make a life saving survivor package. I can tell you this much though - because of a member of our family has a compromised immune system and could die from a cold, we started taking extra precautions. We showered every time we came home and changed into clean "inside" clothes,  and while out, we used a sanitation spray mixture we put in cheap little spray bottles. It's a mixture of alcohol and Betadine. When we came out of stores or came into contact with anything questionable, we sprayed our hands before getting in the car. The same with phone calls on a public phone. It's really not hard at all, people were fascinated with it if they saw it, and new products came out to do the same things. Oh, another thing we did that our doctor recommended was not touching our eyes unless our hands were washed.

Our reward for these simple easy lifestyle habit changes? NO ONE in the family has gotten sick for years! No one has felt like crap, no one has given anything to anyone else, missed work or fun - you name it. And of course, we also enjoyed inner peace and better relationships since most of us also do meditation techniques. 

As far as diet and nutrition tips, which I and many others feel are very important, we'll leave that up to another day in the newsletter or from what the holistic MD is doing.

Remember, it's especially important to keep healthy and the immune system boosted if you are young, older, or not in the best health yourself. And don't forget about those you may give something to who aren't strong enough to survive? How would you feel if you were responsible for killing others, a relative, friend or even a stranger you never knew it happened to. While meditation techniques offers solutions that can help prevent getting a cold or a flu of any kind, if you research all its benefits it's astonishing.

I saw a 140 year old Hunza man who still looked about 60, had bright red hair and sparkling blue eyes. And while some have tried to contribute it to only the mineral content in their water, they often don't take into consideration that the population pauses about every 10 minutes for a very brief meditation. The country also has no crime, violence or disharmony - I don't think that's from minerals even if their health and longevity is a part of their water.

The stress idea behind meditation is to consciously relax your body and focus your thoughts on one thing for a sustained period. This occupies your mind, diverting it from the problems that are causing you stress. Physiologically, it relaxes your body, lowers blood pressure, heart rate, etc. It gives your body time to recuperate, and to clear away stress and negative physical problems that may have built up.

It is said that a certain amount of stress is essential to well being. But when we become overloaded with challenges, and have insufficient time to relax and absorb change, the strains we live with can be damaging to our physical and emotional health, and thus brings down the immune system.
